Frequently Asked Questions

The National Honey Board defines raw honey as “honey as it exists in the beehive or as obtained by extraction, settling or straining without adding heat” or being pasteurized or processed.

Honey stored in sealed containers can remain stable for decades and even centuries! Properly packaged and stored honey retains its quality for a long time.

To keep your honey fresh, store honey at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Always make sure the lid is closed properly as honey loses aroma and flavor and absorb moisture when exposed to air.

Honey may contain Clostridium botulinum spores that can cause infant botulism, a rare but serious disease that affects the nervous system of young babies (under one year old). C. botulinum spores are present throughout the environment and may be found in dust, soil and improperly canned foods. Adults and children over one year of age are routinely exposed to, but not normally affected by, C. botulinum spores because their mature digestive systems can move the spores through the body before they cause any harm. Honey is safe to consume during pregnancy and lactation. While infants are susceptible to the infant botulism, adults, including pregnant females, are not. The concern for babies stems from the fact that infants lack the fully developed gastrointestinal tract of older humans. Since the mother is not in danger of developing this condition, the unborn baby is protected.

The difference between fresh and dry pollen is that dry pollen will have undergone some type of drying process, either using heat or freeze drying, to remove the moisture from it. As a result, dried pollen will feel crunchier and is harder than fresh pollen. Truly fresh bee pollen will be quite soft.

As in terms of the nutrients, vitamins and beneficial effects dried pollen won’t have the enzymes and nutrients levels that fresh pollen will provide due to processing.
